newy.com.au – Major track maintenance is set to take place across the Hunter Valley rail network this weekend, with a significant closure scheduled between Islington Junction and Telarah. The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) will carry out essential works from 3:00am on Saturday, 8 February, through to 1:00am on Monday, 10 February, as part of its ongoing commitment to network safety and reliability.
During this period, crews will focus on crucial maintenance tasks, including track geometry repairs, component replacements, and defect removals along the main lines. Additional activities will include vegetation management, cable replacements, and inspections to ensure the network remains in top condition.
A key impact of the works will be the closure of the Clyde Street level crossing at Islington for 24 hours, from 6:00am on Saturday to 6:00am on Sunday, with traffic diversions in place. The maintenance program also aligns with scheduled works along the New South Wales North Coast railway network, extending between Telarah and Acacia Ridge in Queensland.
To minimise disruptions, ARTC has implemented measures such as directing light towers away from residential areas, reducing dust by watering down work zones, and limiting the number of machines operating at any given time. Passengers relying on NSW TrainLink services will need to plan ahead, as buses and coaches will replace trains during the closure. Travel information and alternative transport options are available at transportnsw.info or by calling 13 22 32.
Motorists and pedestrians are urged to remain cautious around altered traffic conditions, particularly near level crossings where rail machinery will be active. Up-to-date information on road closures and diversions can be accessed via Live Traffic NSW, while details about the maintenance works can be found on the ARTC Trackwork website. Community members seeking additional information can contact ARTC’s Community Line on 1300 550 402.
ARTC’s Group Executive Operations, Clinton Crump, emphasised the importance of this maintenance shutdown, stating, “This period allows us to undertake significant upgrades, including track resurfacing, re-sleepering, and essential structural inspections. With both freight and passenger services on hold, our teams can complete work that would otherwise be impossible with trains in operation.”
Crump acknowledged the challenging summer conditions under which the crews will be working and extended gratitude to both the workers and the Hunter Valley community for their patience and cooperation.
This latest round of trackwork represents a continued investment in the region’s rail infrastructure, ensuring long-term improvements to safety and reliability for both freight and passenger services.
