Newcastle Airport is gearing up for a transformative 2025, with the announcement of Andrew Warrender as Interim CEO and preparations underway for the grand opening of its international terminal and hosting the Australasia Aviation Roundtable.

Andrew Warrender, currently Executive Manager of Aviation and Air Freight Business Development at Newcastle Airport, will assume his new role on Thursday, 9 January 2025. He succeeds Dr Peter Cock, who has served as CEO for a decade. Mr Warrender brings extensive experience, having worked across major Australian and international airports, and has been instrumental in driving terminal expansions, strategic property initiatives, and route development.

Mr Warrender emphasised his commitment to continuing the airport’s momentum. “The new terminal opening next year represents a significant milestone, and we’re seeing a resurgence in passenger confidence, as evidenced by our highest passenger numbers in five years,” he said. He also highlighted the importance of the Astra Aerolab Property Precinct and ongoing property development projects in the airport’s vision for the future.

Outgoing CEO Dr Peter Cock praised Mr Warrender’s expertise and enthusiasm for advancing regional aviation and economic development. “Andrew’s leadership will ensure the airport remains focused on delivering what the region deserves,” Dr Cock said. Airport Chair Jude Munro AO echoed this sentiment, expressing confidence in Mr Warrender’s ability to lead during a pivotal period for the airport.

Adding to the excitement, Newcastle Airport will host the prestigious Australasia Aviation Roundtable from 18–20 June 2025. This event will gather aviation leaders to discuss innovation, sustainability, and future growth opportunities, coinciding with the much-anticipated opening of the international terminal on 1 August 2025.

Dr Cock described the event as a landmark for the Hunter Region, showcasing its potential as a key hub for tourism and business. “This is a chance to demonstrate our region’s offerings, from world-class food and wine to our stunning natural landscapes, to an international audience,” he said.

Destination NSW CEO Steve Cox highlighted the terminal’s role in boosting the state’s $52.9 billion visitor economy, noting the roundtable as an ideal platform to spotlight the region’s growing importance. Andrew Warrender also expressed his excitement for the event, emphasising its potential to attract new airline partnerships and expand connectivity for the Hunter.
