A collection of newly-planted grass trees was stolen from Gregson Park in Hamilton overnight, just weeks after the park reopened following a major upgrade. The theft has left local residents disappointed, especially as the trees were a key feature of the bush tucker garden designed to educate the community about native Australian plants.

The park, which had undergone a series of improvements and was officially reopened earlier this month, included the installation of seven grass trees around a yarning circle. The bush tucker garden was part of the park’s vision to promote Indigenous knowledge and foster a deeper connection to the natural environment.

City of Newcastle expressed its disappointment over the theft and acknowledged the emotional impact it has had on the community. “We understand how important these elements were to the park’s overall design, especially the educational role they played,” a spokesperson for the city said.

The council is now considering options for replacing the stolen plants, potentially with other native bush tucker species, in an effort to restore the garden to its original vision.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact NSW Police to assist with the investigation.

Gregson Park’s Recent Upgrades

Gregson Park has long been a favourite among local families, and the recent upgrades were aimed at enhancing the park’s natural beauty and providing new learning opportunities for visitors. The upgrades included new play equipment, improved pathways, and native plantings to create a welcoming space for recreation and community gatherings.

The inclusion of the bush tucker garden was particularly celebrated, as it was seen as a step towards increasing awareness and appreciation of Australia’s rich Indigenous culture.

While the community is understandably upset by the theft, the City of Newcastle remains committed to maintaining and improving the park. “We will work closely with local stakeholders to ensure that Gregson Park continues to be a space for everyone to enjoy,” the spokesperson added.

For now, residents are being urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent further incidents.
