At 11:45 on 21 October 2024, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews took a prominent role in a large-scale, multi-agency bus crash simulation held at CDC NSW’s Edgeworth depot in Lake Macquarie. The exercise, the biggest of its kind to date, aimed to sharpen the skills of emergency services in a realistic environment involving multiple agencies.
The simulated scenario involved a bus rollover after a collision between two buses and two cars, resulting in multiple casualties. Firefighters from Morisset, Toronto, and Lambton joined forces with NSW Ambulance, the NSW Police Rescue crew, and VRA Rescue NSW to tackle the complex rescue. Hydraulic cutting tools were used to gain access to the overturned bus as emergency personnel worked to extract victims.
NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers played the role of injured passengers, while dummies were used to simulate additional casualties. The element of surprise was key, with responders not given details of the scenario beforehand, ensuring an authentic and challenging environment.
Chief Superintendent of FRNSW, Terrence Farley, highlighted the importance of these exercises. “When our teams face a real emergency, they have the skills and confidence to act quickly and effectively,” Chief Superintendent Farley said. “Joint training with police and ambulance crews enables seamless communication and coordination when it matters most.”
David Mead, CEO of CDC NSW, expressed the company’s support for the initiative. “We’re proud to offer our buses and facilities for such crucial training. These exercises are invaluable for first responders, and we’re happy to contribute to their success,” Mr Mead said.
This training marks another step forward in ensuring emergency crews across agencies can respond efficiently to complex incidents, safeguarding the community in real-world situations.
