In a significant turn of events for Newcastle’s local government, Nuatali Nelmes has conceded defeat to independent candidate Ross Kerridge in the closely fought Lord Mayoral election. After serving nearly ten years as Newcastle’s second-longest-serving Lord Mayor, Nelmes acknowledged that she is likely to fall just a few hundred votes short of re-election. Allthough Newy 87.8 observes it to be in the thousands.
“While the final votes are still being counted, it appears I won’t secure enough support to continue as Lord Mayor,” Nelmes stated in a public announcement. “I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Dr Ross Kerridge on his impending role as Newcastle’s 15th Lord Mayor and wish him all the best for the future.”
Reflecting on her time in office, Nelmes expressed immense pride in the transformation Newcastle has undergone during her tenure. “Together, we’ve invested over $1 billion in local infrastructure, safeguarded jobs and essential services, and became the first council to operate entirely on renewable energy—all amidst the challenges of a global pandemic,” she said.
Nelmes highlighted key achievements such as the completion of the iconic Bathers Way coastal walkway, the renovation of Newcastle Ocean Baths, and the construction of 35 new playgrounds across the city. She also mentioned efforts to address the coastal erosion at Stockton, investments in social and affordable housing, and the enhancement of Newcastle’s cultural scene through projects like the expansion of the Newcastle Art Gallery and the establishment of the New Annual festival.
In response to Nelmes’ concession, Ross Kerridge expressed gratitude and respect for her decade of service. “I want to thank Nuatali for her dedication to Newcastle over the past ten years,” Kerridge said. “Her commitment to our city has been significant, and I hope she continues to contribute her skills and knowledge in new ways.”
Kerridge also acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of his campaign team and supporters. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who shared our vision and worked tirelessly throughout the campaign,” he remarked. “A special thanks to my campaign manager, John Beach, and to my wife, Marion, whose unwavering support has been the cornerstone of my journey.”
Looking ahead, Kerridge emphasised his commitment to serving all residents of Newcastle. “I’m eager to listen to the community and work collaboratively to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead,” he stated. “My aim is to foster a respectful and constructive atmosphere within the council, ensuring we represent the diverse interests of our city.”
Nelmes expressed confidence in the incoming council, noting that five of the six Labor ward councillors are expected to retain their seats, forming the largest group in the new council chamber. She also celebrated the progress made in increasing female representation on the council, a legacy she hopes will continue.
“As I step back from my role, I remain hopeful that Newcastle’s next leaders will build upon the positive momentum we’ve created,” Nelmes said. “My love for this city—from Lambton to Wallsend, Blackbutt to Stockton—is unwavering. I look forward to seeing Newcastle thrive from a new perspective and supporting its growth in other ways.”
Planning to spend more time with her family and friends after a demanding decade in public service, Nelmes acknowledged, “There have been many personal moments I’ve missed due to the responsibilities of leadership. It’s time to reconnect and cherish those relationships.”
She concluded by expressing gratitude to her colleagues, supporters, and the community. “Serving as Lord Mayor has been the privilege of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.”
Looking Forward
As Ross Kerridge prepares to assume the role of Lord Mayor, Newcastle stands on the cusp of a new chapter. Kerridge, bringing a fresh perspective and independent approach, has expressed a commitment to collaborative leadership and community engagement.
“I intend to build upon the solid foundations laid and focus on the issues that matter most to our residents,” Kerridge said. “Together, we can continue to make Newcastle an outstanding place to live, work, and visit.”
The community anticipates continued growth and positive change, hopeful that the new leadership will further enhance Newcastle’s prosperity and vibrancy.
