The Newcastle Labor team has pledged a significant investment in expanding the city’s footpath network, aiming to provide safer and more accessible pathways for all residents.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes announced today that if re-elected, Newcastle Labor will double the city’s footpath delivery, promising to deliver 20 kilometers of new footpaths over the next term of council. This equates to 5,000 meters of new footpath each year. The commitment also includes enhanced maintenance of the existing 1,000 kilometers of footpaths across Newcastle.
This initiative builds on substantial efforts made during the current term of council, including the development and public exhibition of a comprehensive draft Walking and Mobility Plan from June to August 2024. The plan was created in consultation with the city’s Walking and Mobility Working Party.
During the public exhibition period, over 100 residents shared their views, with most submissions supporting the accelerated delivery of footpaths and crossings. City of Newcastle staff will present the final plan to the newly elected council for adoption.
In recent years, under the leadership of the Lord Mayor, Newcastle has witnessed a notable increase in new footpath projects across the city, including in areas such as Elermore Vale, North Lambton, Beresfield, Adamstown, Wallsend, and Jesmond. However, there is still much work to be done.
“We have an ambitious vision for improving walkability and mobility throughout our city,” said Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes. “Our team is focused on delivering new footpaths that address critical gaps in accessing local amenities and infrastructure like pools, playgrounds, bus stops, local town centres, and community halls in places like Birmingham Gardens, Elermore Vale, Waratah West, North Lambton, and Wallsend.”
“Walking should be a viable transport option for everyone, but for many, it currently isn’t. I’m committed to changing that.”
Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen also expressed his dedication to the project, stating, “I’m passionate about our city’s footpaths. During this term of council, we’ve successfully delivered around 2,500 meters of new footpath each year. In the past, footpath projects were often reactive to complaints, but we’ve shifted to a proactive approach. With the completion of our first Walking and Mobility Plan, we’re ready to deliver even more new and refurbished footpaths that Novocastrians need.”
The Newcastle Labor team is united in its commitment to delivering 20 kilometers of new footpaths over the next term, ensuring that every resident can enjoy safer, more accessible pathways throughout the city.
