The race for Newcastle’s next Lord Mayor is intensifying as campaign materials for Dr. Ross Kerridge, leader of the “Our Newcastle” independent group, have been vandalised in North Lambton. This incident comes amid growing tensions in what is shaping up to be a highly contested local election.
Dr. Kerridge took to social media to express his disappointment over the vandalism of his corflutes, as well as those of fellow independent candidate Mark Brooker. “As you may know, respect is a core component of my platform for Lord Mayor and this has been quite alarming to see,” he posted. While the damage may seem minor, Kerridge highlighted that such acts can create feelings of anxiety and contribute to an unsafe environment for candidates and volunteers alike.
“Regardless of the campaign, everyone has a right to feel safe in their homes and their community,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to running a respectful and dignified campaign. In response to the incident, Kerridge mentioned that CCTV footage from nearby homes would be passed on to the police.
With the election looming, tensions between candidates are becoming more visible. Dr. Kerridge’s campaign centres on addressing what he describes as dysfunction and mismanagement within the current council. His platform calls for a return to essential services and ethical governance, in contrast to what he sees as the council’s focus on “vanity projects.”
The vandalism of campaign posters highlights the intensity of the race, which is attracting attention from both established and new players. Liberal candidate Callum Pull has shown similiar interest to Nuatali Nelmes and Ross Kerridge in a recent Newy 87.8 Facebook poll conducted on August 15th. However, as many people prefer to keep their votes private, the poll only garnered 88 responses, highlighting the challenge of gauging public sentiment accurately in a closely fought election.
The upcoming vote is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for Newcastle’s future, with residents set to choose among the established leadership of incumbent Nuatali Nelmes, the reform-driven campaign of Dr. Ross Kerridge, and other candidates vying for the role. The vandalism incident highlights the intensifying competition, with all sides aware of the significant impact their approach could have on the city’s direction in the years to come.
