Rural Fire Service are attending Bromage Road Abermain following reports of burnouts in the area at 4:14pm today. A Vehicle is now on fire at the location.
A car fire was reported in the Hunter Economic Zone (HEZ) following a burnout, adding to the long list of incidents at a site that has been plagued by issues and setbacks over the years.
The recent car fire, which is believed to have been caused by a burnout, is the latest in a series of troubling events at the HEZ. While authorities are still confirming the details, the incident has once again drawn attention to the area, which has been a focal point for safety concerns, illegal activities, and environmental challenges.
Located in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales, the HEZ has a history of being a hotspot for illegal street activities, including burnouts and drag races. These activities have often resulted in dangerous situations, including vehicle fires and accidents. Local law enforcement has conducted numerous operations over the years to curb these activities, yet the large, underutilised spaces within the zone continue to attract those looking for a place to engage in these risky behaviours.
One of the more significant incidents occurred in 2017, when a series of illegal drag races in the HEZ prompted a major crackdown by local police. Several vehicles were impounded, and fines were issued. Despite these efforts, the size of the area and its relative isolation have made it difficult to monitor and police effectively.
The HEZ was initially conceived as a major industrial and economic development project aimed at boosting the local economy and creating jobs. Spanning over 3,500 hectares, the zone was intended to attract a variety of industries, from manufacturing to logistics. However, the project has struggled to meet its ambitious goals.
Since its inception, the HEZ has faced a series of setbacks, including environmental concerns, regulatory hurdles, and a lack of investor interest. Despite the significant potential of the site, it has largely remained underdeveloped, with only a handful of businesses establishing operations there. The ambitious project has often been criticised as a ‘white elephant,’ with much of the land lying unused and becoming a haven for illegal activities, as evidenced by the recent car fire.
The failure of the HEZ to achieve its intended outcomes has been a source of frustration for local stakeholders. Initial projections promised significant economic benefits, but the reality has been disappointing. Issues such as land contamination, complex approval processes, and insufficient infrastructure have all contributed to the slow progress.
Moreover, the lack of a clear strategic direction and cohesive marketing effort to attract businesses has left the HEZ in a state of limbo. While there have been sporadic efforts to revitalise the zone, these have yet to yield tangible results, leaving the HEZ far from the bustling industrial hub it was once envisioned to be.
