Residents of Shortland are calling for an end to vigilante actions after a car, previously targeted with vandalism, was firebombed around 10:50 pm on Sandgate Road. The incident, which involved a loud explosion, has left the community shaken and fearful for their safety.
A reporter from newy.com.au arrived on the scene at 11:07 pm to find Fire and Rescue NSW already working to extinguish the flames, while police had blocked the road and were directing traffic into a side street. The vehicle, which had already had its tyres let down and windows smashed, was found engulfed in flames. Firefighters arrived quickly to control the blaze, but not before the terrifying explosion rocked nearby homes, prompting concerns from residents about the escalating violence.
One resident, Liana, expressed her fear, noting, “The explosions were frightening. The idiot who is doing it isn’t thinking of the house right next to it. One of the explosions happened when firefighters were right next to it.” Another resident, Jenny, who lives on Sandgate Road, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Doing this to send a message is just stupid and incredibly dangerous. This would get you a police record… unlike the guy that hasn’t broken any laws.”
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with many condemning the actions of the vigilante responsible. “Leave the vigilante stuff before someone innocent gets hurt, and let the police do their jobs,” urged Nadine. She also pointed out the danger posed to the elderly residents living nearby and the potential for the fire to spread to neighbouring homes.
In response to the incident, police and fire crews were seen on-site conducting thorough investigations. A sniffer dog was deployed to search the area for clues, and officers combed through gutters, gardens, and other surrounding areas in search of evidence.
Residents are now pleading for calm and for the community to allow law enforcement to handle the situation. “What if this had spread to the neighbour’s house?” asked Dean, highlighting the broader risks posed by such reckless actions.
As the investigation continues, the Shortland community remains on edge, hoping that this latest act of vigilantism will be the last.
The police have yet to make any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing. In the meantime, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
