Around 4:30 pm yesterday (Tuesday 6 August 2024), emergency services were called to the Westbound BP service station at 292 Maitland Road, Mayfield. It was in response to reports of a single vehicle accident where a Toyota Camry collided with a fuel bowser. The driver, a man believed to be in his 80s, crashed into the bowser while attempting to leave the station.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended the scene and provided immediate medical assistance before transporting the man to Calvary Mater Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The identity of the deceased man is yet to be formally confirmed.
Officers from the Newcastle City Police District have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Newy.com.au’s visit to the site revealed that the impact of the crash caused significant damage to a pillar at the service station which was right next to the bowser, the red fire extinguisher box, normally mounted to the pillar had been ripped off, and there was missing and broken panelling underneath, leaving inside of the pillar visible.
Witnesses and anyone with information about the incident are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or visit the Crime Stoppers NSW website. All information provided will be treated with strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information through NSW Police social media pages.
