The Sydney teenager charged over the crash that injured 10 Newcastle Knights supporters at Wallsend will remain on bail after his case was adjourned to 9 December.
Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, an 18-year-old apprentice mechanic, was permitted to have his lawyers appear on his behalf during a brief mention in Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday, 15 October 2026).
He was represented by his new lawyer, solicitor James Janke, of Hamilton Janke Lawyers.
Police were ordered to prepare a brief of evidence, which is expected in the coming weeks.
The court continued Samarasinghe’s bail, with conditions requiring him to live with his parents at their Randwick home and report to Randwick police station daily.
He is prohibited from occupying the driver’s seat of a vehicle and must abstain from alcohol and drugs. His bail conditions also require him to surrender his passport.
The appearance followed eight additional charges announced by NSW Police on Tuesday. Those charges comprise one count each of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and six counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.
Samarasinghe now faces 17 charges over the 3 October crash at the Newcastle Link Road and Transfield Drive roundabout. Supporters had gathered to farewell the Knights ahead of the NRL grand final. All 10 injured people were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
