newy.com.au – An 18 year old driver has been charged with nine offences after a car allegedly struck a crowd supporting a local sporting team at Wallsend, injuring 10 people.
NSW Police said emergency services were called to Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout about 9.30am on Saturday, 3 October 2026.
All 10 people were treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital. In an update issued late on Saturday, police said a five year old girl remained in a critical but stable condition.
A 67 year old man who was initially in a critical condition was reported to be serious but stable.
Four others remained in hospital in stable conditions: a second five year old girl, a two year old girl, a 31 year old woman and a 48 year old man. The remaining four injured people, three men and a woman, have been discharged.
The driver, who holds a P1 provisional licence, was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing. After being released from hospital, he was taken to a police station and charged.
He faces three counts each of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Bail Division, Court 2, on Sunday, 4 October. His licence has also been suspended.
Two male passengers in the car, aged 18 and 19, were not injured.
Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene. Police seized the car for forensic examination, and investigations are continuing.
