newy.com.au – A 23-year-old man has been refused bail on 14 charges after allegedly ramming a police vehicle in a Merewether cul-de-sac on Tuesday night.
Police allege a search of the car uncovered a replica firearm, methylamphetamine and items believed to have been stolen.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop the vehicle on Henry Street about 9.30pm. Police allege it made a U-turn in the cul-de-sac before driving at and colliding with the police vehicle.
The car stopped at the intersection with Macquarie Street, where the driver allegedly ran from the scene. Officers arrested the man in nearby bushland a short time later and took him to Newcastle Police Station.
The charges include using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, dangerous driving, taking and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, and possessing an unregistered, unauthorised pistol in a public place.
He also faces six counts of having goods in his custody suspected of being stolen, along with charges of drug possession, having a knife in a public place, failing to give particulars to another driver and driving unaccompanied on a learner licence.
Police refused the man bail before his appearance in Bail Division Court 2 on Wednesday, where bail was formally refused. He is due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Monday 14 September.
