today14 November 2024

Background

A 46-year-old man has been charged following a police investigation into a break-in at a Heddon Greta electrical substation last month that allegedly led to an explosion and serious damage to critical infrastructure.

The incident reportedly occurred late on Monday, 25 October 2024, when an intruder broke into the substation on Main Road, Heddon Greta, making off with a quantity of copper cabling. The theft allegedly triggered an explosion, which subsequently led emergency services to a nearby residence on Northcote Street, Aberdare, where the man was found with burn injuries. Claiming he was injured in a welding accident, the man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment of burns to his face and body.

Hunter Valley Police District detectives launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of the man at his Aberdare home on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. The man was taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with sabotage, break and enter with intent to steal, and destruction of property. Following his initial bail refusal at Cessnock Local Court, he is now scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, 22 January 2025.

The damage to the substation, considered essential infrastructure, is estimated to exceed $165,000 for repairs and replacement of the stolen cables.
