newy.com.au – A 19-year-old Wallsend man has been charged over a devastating crash that claimed the life of a woman and her unborn child in North Lambton early Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to Newcastle Road about 2.40am on 22 June, where a Commodore sedan and a Hyundai sedan had collided. A 55-year-old woman travelling in the Hyundai died at the scene. The driver of that car, a 28-year-old woman, was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. Police later confirmed that the woman had been pregnant and tragically lost her baby following the crash.

The Commodore’s driver and front-seat passenger allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. Two teenage girls, aged 15 and 17, who were in the back seat of the Commodore, were both seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Following investigations by Strike Force Carrarang, with support from Operation UTAH, police arrested the 19-year-old at a Mayfield home on Tuesday afternoon, 24 June. He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with seven offences, including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death while escaping pursuit, aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, and driving while never licensed.

Police also allege the Commodore had misleading number plates, and the man faces three additional charges related to causing bodily harm by misconduct.

He has been refused bail and is expected to appear before Parramatta Local Court today, 25 June. The crash is now the subject of a critical incident investigation by Hunter Valley Police, under the scrutiny of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
