newy.com.au – A Community Resilience Hub has opened at Mallabula Community Centre in Port Stephens to help Tilligerry peninsula residents access power, internet and emergency information during natural disasters and electricity outages.
The upgrade includes solar panels, a battery backup system, Starlink satellite internet and an emergency messaging screen. Its automated system disconnects from the electricity grid during outages, using stored solar energy to help keep the hub powered. A generator-ready changeover switch has also been installed.
Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said flooding had previously cut road access and caused extensive power outages on the peninsula, leaving the community isolated.
“Mallabula’s geographical location means it’s particularly exposed during severe weather events,” Mayor Anderson said.
She said the hub would provide a practical resource when severe weather disrupted electricity, communications and access to the peninsula, while helping residents prepare for future emergencies.
The project is the result of a two year partnership between Port Stephens Council, Ausgrid and the Port Stephens Community Resilience Network. Mayor Anderson and Ausgrid group executive for network and digital Junayd Hollis joined representatives at the official opening.
The Community Resilience Network drew on its expertise and lived experience to identify what the hub needed to support residents during emergencies.
“Building resilience is a shared responsibility, and partnerships like this are critical to ensuring communities are better prepared for the impacts of extreme weather,” Mr Hollis said.
Outside emergencies, Mallabula Community Centre continues to host meetings, classes, sporting activities and events throughout the year.
