newy.com.au – Hunter Water is launching a water saving campaign urging Lower Hunter households to cut everyday water use, saying small changes can help supplies last longer and delay the need for restrictions.
The “Do Less, Save Lots” campaign coincides with National Water Week, which runs from 19 to 25 October 2026 under the theme “Water is Life”.
The utility is encouraging residents to take four minute showers, water gardens before 10am or after 4pm, use a trigger nozzle on the hose and sweep hard surfaces instead of hosing them.
Hunter Water’s executive manager strategy and engagement, David Derkenne, said the habits were useful in normal conditions as well as during dry periods.
“These simple behaviours help our water storages last longer during normal conditions and become crucial during drought to reduce how much water our community uses.”
Mr Derkenne said saving water now could help delay the need for Level 1 water restrictions, which are introduced when storages reach 60 per cent.
Hunter Water said conservation remained important as the Lower Hunter’s population grew and climate conditions became increasingly variable.
The utility said it was continuing to invest in long term water security initiatives, including the Belmont Desalination Plant. Alongside that investment, it is working with customers to improve water efficiency, reduce leaks and encourage sustainable water use.
“Small actions taken by individuals, households and businesses can collectively make a significant difference in helping secure our water future,” Mr Derkenne said.
Hunter Water is directing residents to its website for more information about National Water Week and water saving advice.
