Shops closed, traffic was diverted and some residents were unable to return home during a police operation in Hamilton South on Sunday.

Police said officers were responding to concerns for a person’s welfare on Hassall Street.

The response involved tactical police, detectives and a police dog team, with ambulance rescue personnel also attending.

Hassall Street was closed to traffic during the operation. Police tape restricted access to the area, with some residents waiting behind the cordon because they could not return to their homes.

Some residents were visibly upset during the response.  Shops also closed while emergency services were at the scene, adding to the disruption for people living in and travelling through the area.

NSW Police subsequently confirmed the operation had ended.

“It has concluded with the person taken to hospital,” a police spokesperson said.
