newy.com.au – Police have charged 15 people with a total of 23 offences and detected two knives during an operation targeting crime around public transport in Newcastle and on the Central Coast.
Police Transport Command North/Central ran Operation Disrupt from 2am on Friday 16 October to 2am on Saturday 17 October 2026. It covered Newcastle, Tuggerah Lakes, Wyong and Gosford, focusing on the transport network and nearby retail precincts.
Officers scanned 110 people for knives, detecting two. They also conducted 26 searches of people, carried out 15 checks on compliance with bail conditions and issued 39 rail infringement notices.
The figures cover the operation as a whole. The police statement did not specify the alleged offences or provide a breakdown of the results for Newcastle.
Police Minister Yasmin Catley said recently passed knife laws would strengthen police efforts to remove dangerous weapons from the community.
Police said Operation Disrupt would continue.
