newy.com.au – Motorists face detours of up to five kilometres when McCaffrey Drive at New Lambton Heights closes westbound for overnight work on the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
Transport for NSW said the closure between Lookout Road and Elbrook Drive was scheduled for Sunday 11 October or Monday 12 October, weather permitting. It will run from 7pm until 5am the following morning while crews continue laying the final asphalt layer for the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the bypass.
Detours via Grandview Road and Elbrook Drive could add up to 10 minutes to journeys. Northbound motorists on Lookout Road who miss the left turn into Grandview Road can use the U-turn at the southern interchange.
The westbound bus stop on McCaffrey Drive between Marshall Street and Elbrook Drive will also close during the work. Pedestrian and cyclist access along McCaffrey Drive will be maintained.
Single lane closures and reduced speed limits will continue on Lookout Road and McCaffrey Drive as required while the project progresses. Drivers are advised to follow signs and traffic control directions and drive to the conditions.
Operators of heavy vehicles wider than three metres should contact the project team on 1800 818 433 at least one day before travelling. Transport for NSW warned that failing to call ahead could result in significant delays. The project operates on UHF channel 52 at the southern interchange.
Vehicles travelling under a permit must stay on their approved route unless an updated permit is obtained from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
Further information about the work is available through Live Traffic NSW or the Live Traffic NSW app.
