newy.com.au – Police have urged Newcastle Knights fans not to gather on major motorways when the team returns from Sydney after Sunday night’s NRL grand final, saying no fan engagements are planned after the game.
The appeal comes after ten people, including three children, were injured when a car struck a crowd of Knights supporters at Wallsend on Saturday morning. Fans had gathered near the Newcastle Link Road and Transfield Drive roundabout to farewell the team ahead of its trip to Sydney. The crash prompted the team bus to be diverted, with police asking supporters to disperse safely and keep roads clear for emergency services.
A high visibility police operation that began on Friday 2 October will continue across Newcastle and the Hunter throughout Sunday and well into the evening. Officers will target antisocial behaviour and actions that put community safety at risk.
In a statement, police asked the public to “engage in a safe and respectful manner regardless of tonight’s grand final outcome”.
Newcastle City Police District officers are being supported by specialist units, including highway patrol, public order and transport police.
Spectators and patrons are being urged to plan their journeys, allow extra travel time and use public transport where possible. Police also reminded people to arrange a safe way home before heading out and never drive while affected by alcohol or drugs.
People attending events should follow directions from police, security and event staff, and look out for friends, family and others in the community.
Trip planning information is available through Transport for NSW. Drivers can check Live Traffic for road closures, special event clearways and traffic reports.
Anyone needing emergency assistance should call Triple Zero (000). For police assistance that is not urgent, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
