newy.com.au – Demolition has begun at Charlestown Fire Station as part of an estimated $9.7 million rebuild, with the replacement due to be completed in early 2028.

Work to pull down the Lake Macquarie station began on 23 September 2026. The project will go to tender after the site is cleared, and construction is due to start in early 2027.

The NSW Government and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) are funding the project. The existing station was built in 1985 and has little room to expand to meet modern firefighting requirements.

The replacement will accommodate permanent and on call crews, providing more training space, improved amenities, additional equipment storage and greater privacy for firefighters.

Its design also includes designated zones to reduce the spread of harmful contaminants brought back from fires. The measures form part of FRNSW’s Clean Fire Station program and are intended to provide safer workspaces.

“Charlestown Fire Station has served the community for more than 40 years, but firefighting has changed significantly since it was built,” FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said.

“Today’s firefighters need facilities that support our diverse workforce. They need more space for equipment storage and maintenance, and room for larger, better-equipped fire trucks.”
