newy.com.au – Construction of Cessnock Hospital’s $138 million redevelopment has reached its highest point, with a new CT scanner also confirmed to help reduce the need to transfer patients elsewhere for diagnostic imaging.
The redevelopment is due for completion in 2027 and the scanner to be installed after the upgrades are finished. The NSW government estimates the CT service will avoid about 100 return trips to other facilities each year, allowing some patients to receive that care at Cessnock.
The scanner will form part of a medical imaging service offering CT, ultrasound and X-ray examinations. Its inclusion has been confirmed following advocacy by Cessnock MP Clayton Barr, according to the government.
The redevelopment centres on a new two-storey acute services building, which will house an expanded emergency department, operating theatres and day surgery spaces. Two new inpatient wards will have single and twin bedrooms, each with an ensuite.
A pharmacy and a unit for sterilising medical equipment are also included. The government says the building is designed to support more integrated care for older residents as well as meet the area’s growing healthcare needs.
A “topping out” ceremoney will be held on Monday, 28 September 2026, to mark the building reaching its highest point.
“Having a CT scanner in Cessnock Hospital will allow our medical team to offer a higher quality of care and treatment,” Mr Barr said.
The government estimates construction will support about 250 direct jobs over the life of the project, with the potential for hundreds of indirect jobs.
