newy.com.au – Wickham’s Return and Earn machine will close on September 20 ahead of a move to Broadmeadow, where it is scheduled to reopen 10 days later.

The machine at the Croatian Wickham Sports Club, 20 Albert Street, will stop operating at 7pm on Sunday, September 20. Container returns at the new site, in the Newcastle PCYC carpark at 28 Young Road, will begin at 8am on Wednesday, September 30.

The Broadmeadow machine will then operate daily from 8am to 6pm.

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp welcomed the relocation, saying the Wickham site had drawn community concern.

“The Wickham Return and Earn has been a site of community concern for some time now and I am pleased to hear that TOMRA Cleanaway has secured a suitable alternative location.”

Residents wanting to return eligible bottles, cans and cartons during the closure can use alternative collection points in Carrington and Mayfield.

The Carrington options are the Return and Earn machine at Swell Storage, 4 Gross Street, and the Newcastle Container Return Depot at 52 Parker Street. A machine is also available at Woolworths Mayfield, at the corner of Maitland Road and Valencia Street.

The move will shift the service from Wickham to a location serving Broadmeadow and nearby Lambton, New Lambton and Adamstown.

Residents across the Newcastle local government area have returned more than 399 million eligible bottles, cans and cartons through 13 local return points since the scheme began.
