newy.com.au – A 23-year-old man facing 14 charges has been refused bail after allegedly ramming a police vehicle during an attempted traffic stop in Merewether.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a vehicle on Henry Street about 9.30pm. Police allege the driver made a U-turn in the cul-de-sac before driving at their vehicle and colliding with it.
The vehicle stopped at an intersection on Macquarie Street, where the driver ran from the scene, police said. Officers arrested the man in nearby bushland a short time later.
Police allege a search of the vehicle uncovered a replica firearm, methamphetamine and items believed to have been stolen.
The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with offences including dangerous driving, possessing an unregistered, unauthorised pistol in a public place, possessing a prohibited drug and driving unaccompanied as a learner.
He was refused bail by police and again when he appeared before Bail Division Court 2. He is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on 14 September 2026.
