newy.com.au – A person escaped a unit fire at Merewether, while a house was gutted by a separate blaze at Jesmond.
Watkins Street, Merewether, is closed in both directions between Helen and Berner streets. Bluegum Road at Jesmond is also closed and is expected to remain shut for some time.
The Watkins Street unit fire prompted a significant emergency services response at 11.30pm. One person was inside the unit and evacuated without assistance.
Emergency services were called to Jesmond at 12.15am and found a house fully engulfed in flames. Fire and Rescue NSW believes the home was derelict and unoccupied. No one was injured.
Both fires have been extinguished. Fire and Rescue NSW crews are inspecting the properties, while police are speaking with residents. The causes of both fires have yet to be determined, and investigations are continuing.
Emergency services are expected to remain at both sites for some time.
