newy.com.au – Motorists using the New England Highway and Cessnock Road at Maitland face intermittent overnight lane closures and reduced speed limits from Monday, 7 September 2026.

Transport for NSW said geotechnical and survey investigations were being carried out to inform the proposed New England Highway Maitland westbound upgrade. The preliminary work will continue intermittently until the end of November, weather permitting.

Night work will be undertaken as required between 7pm and 5am from Monday to Friday. Single-lane closures, traffic controllers and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place during those periods, with delays possible.

Shoulder closures will also be used during daytime work.

Drivers have been urged to follow signs and traffic controllers and adjust their speed to the conditions.

Oversize or overmass vehicle operators must call ahead on UHF channel 45 to arrange an escort through the work site. Vehicles travelling under a permit must remain on the approved route unless the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator issues an updated permit.

Motorists can check the Live Traffic NSW website or app for current conditions. App users can search for Maitland and follow the incident to receive updates.
