newy.com.au – Lower Hunter water storages are holding at 71.8 per cent, but households and businesses are being urged to curb consumption as warmer conditions increase demand across the region.
Grahamstown Dam was at 66.9 per cent on Friday, while Chichester Dam was at 95 per cent. Storage levels at the Anna Bay and Tomago sandbeds were 96.3 per cent and 74 per cent respectively.
Hunter Water said the system remained stable but was heavily dependent on rainfall and could decline quickly during an extended dry spell. The utility estimates storages could fall from typical operating levels to empty within about three years in a severe drought.
The warning follows a Bureau of Meteorology long-range outlook indicating much of eastern Australia is likely to experience a warmer-than-average spring, with below-average rainfall possible in some areas.
Hunter Water executive manager strategy and engagement David Derkenne said water use typically increased during the warmer months as residents spent more time watering gardens and businesses faced higher demand.
“As we head into spring, we’re encouraging everyone to think about how they use water at home and at work. We know conditions can change quickly in the Hunter, that’s why every day is a good day to save water,” Mr Derkenne said.
“Small actions taken by thousands of households and businesses across the region add up to significant savings.”
Residents are being encouraged to keep showers to four minutes, repair leaking taps and toilets, and run washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads. Hunter Water also recommends watering gardens before 10am or after 4pm, using mulch to retain moisture and sweeping hard surfaces instead of hosing them.
The appeal comes as construction continues on the Belmont Desalination Plant, intended to provide a water source that does not depend on rainfall. Hunter Water says the plant will be able to supply up to 30 million litres of drinking water a day once completed.
