newy.com.au – Newcastle and Hunter motorists renewing eligible private vehicle registrations from September 1 will pay $100 less, while motorcycle owners will receive an $80 discount.
The NSW government says the automatic discount will apply to more than 4.4 million vehicles statewide. About 360,000 privately owned light vehicles are due for renewal in September.
However, motorists whose registrations fell due in July or August will not receive the saving until they renew in 2027.
No application is required. The reduced fee will apply when an eligible vehicle is due for renewal, when a new vehicle is registered in NSW or when a previously unregistered vehicle is put back on the road.
Roads and Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison said the measure was intended to ease household transport costs.
“We know it’s not cheap to get from A to B, which is why we’re making sure drivers, motorcyclists and commuters on public transport can save some of their hard-earned money,” she said.
“Our registration discount is automatically applied, meaning there’s no homework, just savings, so families can spend money on their loved ones instead.”
Vehicle owners can check their registration details and arrange digital renewal reminders through their MyServiceNSW account or the Service NSW app.
The registration discount sits alongside other NSW government transport measures, including a $50 weekly toll cap, the removal of toll administration fees and a 12-month freeze on Opal fares at 2025 prices.
