newy.com.au – Former Boeing executive Dr William “Bill” Lyons has been appointed the University of Newcastle’s next Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry and Engagement, although he will not begin the role until September 2026.
Dr Lyons will be responsible for strengthening the university’s relationships with industry, government and community organisations, as well as helping researchers turn their work into commercial products and practical applications.
He brings more than 30 years of experience spanning aerospace, advanced manufacturing, sustainability and emerging technologies. Dr Lyons spent 27 years with Boeing in senior engineering, research and global technology positions, including as senior executive director for enterprise technology strategy, capabilities and partnerships.
The university said he had overseen Boeing’s research partnerships with universities and national laboratories and helped manage its multibillion-dollar annual research and development investment. His work covered areas including artificial intelligence, autonomous technology, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing and sustainability.
Dr Lyons also helped establish more than 20 research and industry consortiums and co-founded the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of Sheffield, which links advanced manufacturing operations with university research.
He now runs Arriva Advisors, a consulting firm working with aerospace, defence and industrial organisations on technology development and commercialisation.
University of Newcastle vice-chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky said Dr Lyons’ experience would support efforts to deepen the institution’s external partnerships.
“Dr Bill Lyons is a globally respected leader who has spent his career building powerful connections between research, industry and innovation,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“His track record in developing international partnerships, commercialising technology and leading large-scale innovation ecosystems makes him well placed to help advance our strategic priorities.”
Dr Lyons holds a PhD in atmospheric physics from the University of Queensland, an executive MBA in leadership from Seattle University and first-class honours degrees in computer science and atmospheric science from James Cook University.
He is due to take up the Newcastle position on September 28, 2026.
