newy.com.au – A 40-year-old Bar Beach man has been charged after two men were allegedly confronted by a person armed with a knife in the Horseshoe Beach car park.
Newcastle City police were called to the beach after reports of the confrontation about 5.15pm on Wednesday, August 12.
Police said the two men backed away from the armed person. Officers arrested the 40-year-old nearby a short time later after checks allegedly revealed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
A knife was seized at the scene and sent for examination.
The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station, where police dealt with the warrant and charges alleging domestic violence-related stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical harm, a subsequent offence of having a knife in a public place, and failing to appear in accordance with a bail acknowledgment.
He was refused bail and appeared before the Bail Division of the Local Court on Friday, where bail was again refused. He is due to appear in Maitland Local Court on Wednesday, August 19, over those matters.
Following further inquiries into the Horseshoe Beach incident, police charged the man with being armed with intent to commit the indictable offence of intimidation and using a knife in a public place to cause a person to fear for their safety.
He remains in custody and is due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, August 20.
