newy.com.au – Newcastle State MP Tim Crakanthorp is encouraging Newcastle running clubs to apply for grants of between $5000 and $100,000 to improve safety and encourage more women, girls and gender-diverse people to take part.

The NSW government’s Run My Way Grant Program will fund practical safety measures, programs and partnerships designed to help runners feel safer and more connected in their communities.

Applicants can submit up to two applications, with grants capped at $100,000. Applications close on Monday, September 14.

The grants are part of a $1.3 million, multi-year partnership between Transport for NSW and the NSW Office of Sport. The broader Run My Way initiative includes research, partnerships and program trials intended to address barriers to participation.

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said running provided physical and mental health benefits, while clubs also gave people an opportunity to connect with others.

“Sometimes running can feel scary and unsafe and the Run My Way Grant Program aims to improve running experiences and perceptions of safety for women, girls and gender diverse runners in our community,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison said more women were taking up running, but some had reported harassment or feeling unsafe while exercising.

“We’re encouraging local sporting organisations and clubs to apply for the Run My Way grants and show us your new ideas on how to help people feel safer and more confident running in their local area,” she said.
