newy.com.au – A $2 million NSW Government grant will help fund a Charlestown intersection upgrade and another section of shared pathway forming part of a major active transport link to Whitebridge and the Fernleigh Track.
Lake Macquarie City Council received the funding through the Faster Assessments Incentive Program, which recognises councils for their development assessment performance. The grant will partly cover a major upgrade to the Guna Street and Kaleen Street intersection, as well as construction of the pathway between Attunga Park and Flaggy Creek.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz said the funding reflected the work of the council’s development assessment team and improvements made by streamlining its assessment process.
“It’s a big win for our community and allows Council to continue constructing this important shared pathway in the heart of Charlestown,” he said.
Work between Attunga Park and Guna Street is expected to be completed by 2029, while construction on the Flaggy Creek section is already under way.
The broader Charlestown to Whitebridge Infrastructure Corridor Upgrade Project will connect Charlestown, Whitebridge and the Fernleigh Track, providing safer access to schools, sporting facilities, community destinations and public transport.
State Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison said active transport and infrastructure connecting communities were “incredibly important”.
“The Minns Labor Government, in partnership with Lake Macquarie City Council, is investing in our local area to promote physical and mental wellbeing, reduce pollution and congestion, and strengthen our local economy,” she said.
The council has now secured $5.65 million in NSW Government funding for the project, including $3.65 million through the Get NSW Active program.
