newy.com.au – The City of Newcastle has commenced essential roadworks in Wallsend as part of an infrastructure project designed to prepare for dual lane upgrades in the western corridor. The project comes after concept designs were adopted by the council on 12 December 2023, following a comprehensive community engagement process.
The roadworks will see five key intersections in Wallsend upgraded to improve traffic flow and safety, reducing congestion before and during the widening of Longworth Avenue and Minmi Road. Longworth Avenue will be expanded to two lanes in each direction, with clearway restrictions during peak travel times. On-street parking will only be allowed outside of these peak periods. Detailed plans for these changes are underway, with construction scheduled to start in 2025.
Right-hand turns from Longworth Avenue onto Bean Street, Cameron Street, and Maitland Street will be eliminated. These streets will be restricted to left turn in and left turn out only, aimed at avoiding delays from vehicles waiting to turn right. Alternative routes will be necessary, such as using the roundabout near Bunnings to return southbound or accessing Bean Street and Maitland Street via other streets.
The works will also include new landscaping and the retention of existing bus stops along Longworth Avenue, with improved shelters planned. The first stage of related works was completed with the construction of a new roundabout at Cowper Street and Newcastle Road. Further intersection upgrades at Cowper Street, Cameron Street, Douglas Street, Stapleton Street, and Tillie Street will occur over the coming months.
These efforts are intended to address traffic congestion in response to growing development in the area. The City of Newcastle will continue to update residents as the project progresses.
