Council Approves $16 Million for Road Upgrades Across Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie City Council has committed over $16 million this financial year to upgrade and enhance the region’s road network, promising significant improvements for both motorists and pedestrians across the local government area (LGA).

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz detailed some of the key projects, including a $3.4 million rehabilitation effort for two roads in Balmoral, a $2.5 million overhaul of Elizabeth Parade in Charlestown, and a $1.7 million upgrade for South Parade in Blackalls Park.

“These upgrades will not only enhance road safety but also improve the overall experience for road users,” Mayor Shultz said. “We’re also excited about the major investments coming to other parts of the city, such as the $7 million transformation of Watkins Road in Wangi Wangi.”

The Watkins Road project has delivered close to one kilometre of new footpaths, connecting Wangi’s local shops with Wangi Point Holiday Park. “This is a fantastic outcome for the thousands who visit Wangi every year,” Shultz added.

Karen Partington, Council’s Manager of Asset Management, highlighted the ongoing work on pedestrian infrastructure, with more than 6 kilometres of new footpaths and shared paths installed in the 2023-2024 period, extending the city’s existing 675-kilometre pathway network.

“Our aim is to boost connectivity and promote active transport like walking and cycling throughout our suburbs,” Partington said. She emphasised that road rehabilitation projects are prioritised using factors such as road safety, current condition, and traffic volumes.

“As one of the largest regional councils in New South Wales, we oversee a vast network of 1,370 kilometres of roads. While the task is immense, we are continually working to address the most pressing needs,” she stated.
