newy.com.au – Police seized 10 e-bikes they identified as non-compliant during a joint operation with Transport for NSW across Maitland and surrounding suburbs on Thursday 5 November 2026.

Officers also seized two bicycles fitted with petrol motors, two e-scooters and a trail bike. They issued 26 penalty notices for speeding and unregistered vehicle offences during the operation.

The operation ran from 3.45pm to 8pm in Maitland, East Maitland, Rutherford, Ashtonfield, Metford, Tenambit and surrounding areas. Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers were assisted by Port Stephens-Hunter Police District and PolAir.

Traffic North Commander Acting Superintendent Martin Searle said the seized e-bikes could exceed legal speed and power limits, while the motorcycles taken by police could not be registered for use on NSW roads.

“These vehicles pose a significant safety risk to riders, pedestrians and other road users,” he said.

“Before purchasing an e-bike, parents and riders should take the time to check it complies with NSW regulations.”

Acting Superintendent Searle said police were actively targeting illegal and modified e-bikes and motorcycles. He warned that non-compliant bikes could be seized and owners could face significant penalties.

Roads Minister and Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison backed the operation and warned riders about the consequences of using non-compliant bikes.

“Our message is simple: if you’re riding an e-bike or dirt bike, make sure it’s compliant, otherwise it’ll be confiscated and destroyed,” she said.
