newy.com.au – Hunter Water has installed a floating litter trap and boom system on Styx Creek to capture stormwater rubbish before it reaches Throsby Creek and downstream mangroves.

Styx Creek is Throsby Creek’s largest tributary and carries stormwater from a highly urbanised catchment.

“The litter trap has been specifically designed for the tidal conditions of Styx Creek and will capture and contain floating litter for safe and efficient removal by maintenance crews,” Hunter Water executive manager strategy and engagement David Derkenne said.

Hunter Water delivered the project through the NSW Government’s Local Small Commitments Allocation program, in collaboration with members of the Throsby Creek Government Agencies Committee.

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp, who chairs the committee, said improving the creek’s health would bring benefits for people who use the waterway.

“Throsby Creek is enjoyed by boaters, fishers, and the local First Nations community, amongst others. By improving the health of the waterway, we also improve its amenity,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

The project also supports ongoing water quality monitoring in Lower Throsby Creek near the Newcastle Rowing Club. Hunter Water says the data is helping government agencies and community representatives better understand the waterway and inform decisions about its management and use.

Mr Derkenne said the NSW Government funding complemented Hunter Water’s ongoing work to understand and improve water quality across the Throsby Creek catchment.

He said the trap would build on clean up efforts by volunteers, community groups and residents, while urging the community to help prevent rubbish from reaching waterways.

“While infrastructure has a part to play, everyone can help keep our waterways cleaner by disposing of waste properly, securing loose rubbish and preventing litter from entering stormwater drains.”
