Police have suspended an overnight search of Newcastle Harbour at Honeysuckle after a reported splash raised concerns for a man seen nearby.
Residents observed police searching the waterfront and marine rescue boats on the harbour, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter circling overhead in the early hours of Monday, 12 October 2026.
NSW Police told newy.com.au the search began after a woman reported hearing a splash.
“There was a search last night following reports a woman heard a splash, and a man – who had been seen nearby a short time earlier – was then unable to be seen,” a police spokesperson said.
“No missing persons reports or concern for welfare calls have been raised in the area. The search has been suspended.”
Local resident Fi Llewellyn told newy.com.au the activity was near the waterfront opposite Cold Rock Ice Creamery at Honeysuckle. She believed a man had jumped into the water but failed to resurface. She said around 14 police were searching on the ground and water, with residents in apartments above the area kept awake during the operation.
The police statement confirmed the reported splash and subsequent search, but did not establish that anyone had been seen entering the water.
