newy.com.au – Cameron and Michelle Turner will use a fundraiser in memory of their daughter Florence to support Sleapy’s Foundation, the charity that helped their family during her illness with brain cancer.
The foundation provided practical and financial assistance during Florence’s 13 month illness. After her death, her parents created Flo’s Day to celebrate her life and raise money for families in need.
Part of the proceeds from the Flo’s Day fundraiser at Club Lambton on Saturday 24 October 2026 will go to the foundation. The event starts at noon.
“Sleapy’s Foundation was there for us during some of our darkest moments. Their kindness and generosity helped ease some of the immense pressure our family was facing,” Mr Turner said.
“Our way of saying thank you is by using Flo’s Day to ensure Sleapy’s Foundation can continue providing that same support to families facing childhood cancer in the future.”
The foundation has provided financial assistance and practical support to people with cancer and their families since 2019. Its founder, Peter Sleap, was named City of Newcastle’s Citizen of the Year in 2026.
“After surviving stage four throat cancer I wanted to give back to the community and that’s when I started Sleapy’s Foundation,” Mr Sleap said.
Nominations are now open for the 2027 awards. Mr Turner said the awards offered another way to recognise people who helped others.
“People like Peter don’t do what they do for awards or praise, but I am so glad someone made the effort to nominate him last year.”
Nominations can be submitted through City of Newcastle’s awards website for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year.
Nominations close on 20 November 2026, and recipients will be announced in early 2027.
