newy.com.au – Councillor Declan Clausen returns as Newcastle’s Deputy Lord Mayor today for a one year term, succeeding Cr McCabe under a planned rotation of the role.
The council unanimously approved the arrangement in 2024 to share the position among four councillors during the current council term. Cr Callum Pull was the first to serve under the rotation.
Cr Clausen was first elected to council in 2015 and held the deputy position for seven consecutive years from 2017 to 2024. The council says his return takes him into a record eighth year in the role.
“I’m incredibly proud to have represented our community on Council for more than 11 years, and it is a great privilege to again serve Newcastle as Deputy Lord Mayor,” Cr Clausen said.
Lord Mayor Gavin Morris thanked the outgoing deputy, whose term included taking on the Lord Mayor’s duties.
“I want to firstly say a sincere thank you to Cr McCabe. When former Lord Mayor Ross Kerridge was unwell, and again after he resigned, Cr McCabe took on the responsibilities of Lord Mayor,” Cr Morris said.
“She did so with care through a really tough period, and she’s earned the thanks of Council and the Newcastle community for the way she managed that process.”
Cr Clausen will serve until 7 October 2027, when Cr Deahnna Richardson is scheduled to take over as Deputy Lord Mayor.
