newy.com.au – A Hamilton East home was destroyed and its roof collapsed after a car caught fire in its double garage on Monday night.
All occupants escaped safely and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters were alerted at 10.56pm on Monday 5 October to reports of explosions inside the garage at the Warrah Street property.
Fire and Rescue NSW said flames spread from the garage to the home, destroying it and causing the roof to collapse. The property also sustained smoke and water damage.
Eight firefighting units, including a ladder platform, attended and extinguished the blaze.
Witness Kris Maree said the fire was well alight when they came across it while returning home from the movies. Emergency crews were already at the scene, with more arriving.
In a Facebook comment, Kris said the couple living at the property had been alerted by their car alarm and were able to call triple zero and leave the home.
“Neighbours were all helpful and supportive,” Kris said.
“Emergency services did an amazing job and I really hope that the community rallies around these lovely people and helps them through the next steps after their loss.”
Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and established a crime scene. Police said the car and house were extensively damaged and inquiries into the circumstances were continuing.
Firefighters have handed the scene over to NSW Police. Fire and Rescue NSW investigators are expected to attend on Tuesday to determine the cause.
