newy.com.au – Police have launched an operation for NRL grand final celebrations in Newcastle on Sunday, October 4, covering the McDonald Jones Stadium live site, the CBD and licensed venues.

Newcastle City Police District officers will be supported by highway patrol, transport police and specialist units including the Public Order and Riot Squad.

The district’s commander, Acting Superintendent Kristin Marshall, said: “There will be a strong and visible police presence across the city, at the live sites and around licensed venues throughout the day and into the night. Our message is simple: have fun, celebrate safely and respect those around you.”

Police are urging people attending grand final events to plan their journeys before leaving home, allow extra travel time and use public transport where possible.

Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Barnes said: “If you’re planning to drink, organise a safe way home before you go out. Don’t leave it until the end of the night and don’t risk getting behind the wheel.

“Drivers also need to be aware there will be more pedestrians around entertainment precincts, licensed venues, and town centres throughout the weekend. Slow down, stay alert and look out for people who may be crossing roads or moving between venues.”

Police have also reminded spectators to follow directions from officers, security and event staff, look out for others and never drive if affected by alcohol or drugs.

Public transport information and trip planning are available through Transport for NSW. Drivers can check Live Traffic for road closures, special event clearways and traffic reports.
