newy.com.au – Double demerits will apply for certain traffic offences over the Labour Day long weekend as police target dangerous driving across Newcastle and the Hunter amid expected holiday traffic and NRL Grand Final crowds.
Operation Labour Day 2026 will run from 12.01am on Friday, 2 October 2026, until 11.59pm on Monday, 5 October 2026. Police expect holiday travel, warmer weather and Grand Final gatherings to bring more vehicles and pedestrians onto the region’s roads.
Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol officers, supported by local police and specialist commands, will target speeding, drink and drug driving, fatigue, illegal mobile phone use, and seatbelt and helmet offences.
The operation comes as police report 261 deaths on NSW roads so far this year, compared with 250 at the same time last year.
Newcastle-Hunter Sector Highway Patrol Chief Inspector Thomas Barnes said drivers needed to recognise the increased risks of a busy long weekend.
“Our officers will be highly visible throughout the operation, conducting patrols and random breath and drug testing across the region. If you’re doing the wrong thing, there’s a strong chance you’ll be caught.”
Motorists are being urged to plan their journeys, allow extra travel time, take regular breaks and remain patient. Police are also warning drivers to watch for pedestrians around beaches, hospitality venues, entertainment precincts and town centres.
The NRL Grand Final on Sunday, 4 October, is expected to add to vehicle and pedestrian traffic as people head to licensed venues or gather with family and friends. Police will focus on pedestrian safety and monitor alcohol related incidents throughout the weekend.
Chief Inspector Barnes also appealed to people celebrating the Grand Final to help keep the community safe.
“If you’re planning to drink, organise a safe way home before you go out. Don’t leave it until the end of the night and don’t risk getting behind the wheel.”
