newy.com.au – A 14 year old boy accused of driving a stolen sedan that crashed at Ashtonfield and left another boy injured has been charged with nine offences and refused bail.

Police arrested the boy near Beresfield on Thursday morning, 1 October, following inquiries under Operation Soteria. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and later appeared in a children’s court, where he was refused bail. He is due to return to the same court on Tuesday, 6 October.

Police were called to South Seas Drive about 5.30am on Tuesday, 29 September. They allege the sedan hit a kerb, became airborne and rolled before landing outside a home, and that the driver ran from the scene.

Another 14 year old boy, identified by police as the passenger, was arrested at the scene. NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed him before he was taken to hospital under police guard. Police said his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

Police allege the sedan had been stolen from a home on Coromandel Close, Ashtonfield, about 4.30am that day, an hour before the crash. Officers said they found and seized a mobile phone and a balaclava inside the car, which was towed for forensic examination.

The alleged driver’s charges include taking and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving furiously causing bodily harm, failing to stop and assist after an impact causing injury, and reckless or dangerous driving.

He is also charged with affray, attempted aggravated entry with intent to steal, aggravated break and enter, and two counts of disguising his face with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The passenger was earlier charged with aggravated break and enter and being carried in a vehicle taken without the owner’s consent. He was granted strict conditional bail to appear in a children’s court on Monday, 19 October.
