newy.com.au – Trackwork on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line has been rescheduled and extra trains will run for Knights fans heading to the NRL grand final at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday, 4 October.
Transport for NSW expects 80,000 fans at the sold out event at Accor Stadium. The Knights will face the Sydney Roosters in the men’s decider, while the Roosters will play the Brisbane Broncos in the NRLW grand final.
Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said in a statement: “158 extra suburban services and 30 extra Hunter and Central Coast services will be available for fans to ensure that everybody gets to and from the game.”
The Central Coast and Newcastle Line will operate to its normal weekend timetable, supplemented by extra trains from 10am to provide services to Sydney at least every 30 minutes. Freight trains will not use the line on Sunday, freeing capacity for passenger services.
Additional Hunter Line services will run before and after the event for passengers connecting at Newcastle Interchange. Fans travelling from Newcastle should change at Strathfield for trains to Olympic Park. Extra return services will run after the match.
Mr Longland urged fans to use public transport.
“Travel on all modes of public transport is included in your match ticket – you just need to show your ticket to transport staff when getting on board. Keep in mind that this travel entitlement does not include the Sydney Airport train station access fee which needs to be paid separately.”
Stadium gates open at 1pm. The NRLW grand final kicks off at 4pm, followed by the NRL match at 7.30pm. The men’s game is expected to finish about 9.20pm.
Transport for NSW warned fans not to drive to Olympic Park unless they have prebooked parking. Road closures will apply within the precinct throughout the day. Those who need to drive can consider parking at a commuter car park and completing their journey by train or event bus.
Service updates and trip planning are available through Transport for NSW’s grand final travel page and the Opal Travel app. Traffic conditions and road closures can be checked on Live Traffic NSW.
