newy.com.au – Work has begun on a $7.6 million replacement for Teralba’s deteriorating Racecourse Road bridge, with motorists to use a temporary single-lane crossing during construction.
The bridge, which crosses the creek east of Teralba Bowling Club, will close for a short period while the temporary crossing is established. The full replacement is expected to take about 12 months.
The existing bridge is being replaced because of its poor structural condition. The new crossing will be built to support heavy vehicles and provide unrestricted two-way traffic, improving access for freight operators and other road users.
The project also includes a new shared path with a boardwalk across the creek, along with roadworks intended to improve safety at the Blair Street and York Street intersection.
The federal government is contributing $5 million through its Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, with Lake Macquarie City Council providing the remaining $2.6 million.
Lake Macquarie mayor Adam Shultz said bridges needed to be replaced as they reached the end of their service life.
“Replacing ageing transport infrastructure is an important part of keeping our community safe on the roads,” he said.
