newy.com.au – Wallsend residents and businesses have until 11 October 2026 to comment on plans to add natural features to Ironbark Creek as part of works aimed at reducing flooding in the suburb’s CBD.
Hunter Water plans to widen sections of the stormwater channel between Cowper Street and Federal Park so the creek can carry more water during heavy rain. The project is in the design phase, with construction expected to start from mid-2027, subject to approvals and weather conditions.
The consultation focuses on how natural features could be incorporated into sections of the creek, rather than the channel widening itself. Hunter Water says the additions are intended to improve the waterway’s health and appearance alongside the flood-reduction works.
Hunter Water executive manager strategy and engagement David Derkenne said community feedback would help shape those environmental improvements.
“Naturalising urban waterways can improve water quality, provide habitat for native plants and animals and create a more attractive waterway for the community to enjoy.”
The naturalisation work is funded through the Australian Government’s Local Environmental Projects Program. Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery pointed to $10 million in federal support secured by Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon.
Ms Hornery said she had been fighting for the project for 19 years and encouraged residents to complete the survey or speak with project staff at information stalls.
Site investigations are planned for later in 2026 as design work continues.
Residents can ask questions and provide feedback at three pop-up stalls during September. Project staff will be at Wallsend Active Hub on Boscawen Street, opposite Plattsburg Public School, from 10am to noon on Saturday, 19 September.
A stall at Wallsend Rotunda, on the corner of Tyrrell and Nelson streets, will run from 11am to 1pm on Tuesday, 22 September. The team will also be at Wallsend Village Shopping Centre, 24 Kokera Street, from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, 26 September.
Feedback can also be provided through the five-minute survey available on Hunter Water’s project webpage. The survey closes at 5pm on Sunday, 11 October 2026.
