newy.com.au – Police have established a crime scene and launched an investigation after a fire destroyed a two-storey townhouse in Mayfield and damaged an adjoining home on Monday night.
A 42-year-old man attended the Carrington Street address about 9.30pm on September 14 and was detained by police before being taken to hospital for assessment. Police said no injuries were reported from the fire.
Emergency services were called about 7pm, with Fire and Rescue NSW’s Lambton station reporting multiple triple-zero calls. Officers from Newcastle City Police District arrived to find the property fully alight.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the townhouse was destroyed. The Lambton station said crews prevented the flames spreading to neighbouring properties, although the adjoining townhouse sustained damage.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Firefighters also urged residents to check their smoke alarms and keep escape routes clear. The Lambton station encouraged households to remove clutter from hallways, stairs and exits, and make sure everyone could get out safely in an emergency.
