newy.com.au – Ausgrid has been named Large Employer of the Year at the 2026 NSW Training Awards after its apprentice program achieved a 95 per cent completion rate.
The electricity distributor’s Bright Spark Apprentice Program supports 174 apprentices across the business, which operates throughout Sydney, the Central Coast, Newcastle and the Hunter.
The program combines workplace experience with training delivered with partners including TAFE NSW and employment services provider Busy at Work. Apprentices are supported by trainers, mentors, supervisors and other workers as they move through their qualifications.
Ausgrid group executive for people and culture Celina Cross said the award reflected the work of those involved in training and supporting apprentices.
“While our name is on the award, it really belongs to the many people who help our apprentices succeed every day,” Ms Cross said.
“We see apprenticeship training as an investment in our people, our communities and the future of the energy industry, and we’re grateful to be part of that journey.”
Fourth-year substation technician apprentice Jaqueline Marshall said access to support and experience across different parts of the electricity business had helped build her skills and confidence.
“What stands out about the Bright Spark program is that you’re never learning alone. There’s always someone willing to help, whether it’s a supervisor, mentor, trainer or another apprentice,” Ms Marshall said.
“The hands-on experience you get across different parts of the business and the support from people around you has given me confidence in my skills and shown me just how many opportunities there are for a long-term career in the energy industry.”
Ausgrid said the program was intended to provide career opportunities for young and mature-age workers while building the skilled workforce required to maintain the electricity network and support the energy transition.
