newy.com.au – Southbound traffic on Lookout and Charlestown roads will be reduced to one lane for a weekend as work continues on the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
The restriction will apply between the bypass’s southern interchange at McCaffrey Drive and Hurn Street from 7pm on Friday, August 28, until 5am on Monday, August 31, weather permitting.
Crews will lay the final asphalt surface along the southbound lanes. Traffic controllers, lower speed limits and signs will be in place through the work zone.
The bus stop opposite Grandview Road will move about 50 metres north on Sunday to maintain access during the work.
Transport for NSW has set aside the following two weekends as contingency dates if weather prevents the resurfacing from going ahead as planned.
Heavy vehicles with an overall or ground-contact width greater than three metres must contact the project team on 1800 818 433 at least one day before travelling through the area. The project uses UHF channel 52 at the southern interchange.
Permit vehicles must remain on their approved route unless the operator obtains an updated permit from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
Completing the surface is required before a third southbound lane can open between Grandview Road and Carnley Street. The extra lane is intended to improve traffic flow once the bypass opens.
The Rankin Park to Jesmond section is expected to open before the end of 2026, subject to weather.
